How Can You Tell When You Need to Get a Tooth Pulled?

While many people feel embarrassed or ashamed when they get the news that they need to get a tooth pulled, they really shouldn’t. We understand in the dental world that there are many different situations that can require an otherwise healthy tooth to need removal. It’s important for you to understand there were not judging you, and our goal is to simply give you the finest smile possible and make sure your oral health is as positive as we can make it.

There are several situations that might call for getting a tooth pulled. First of all, wisdom teeth will almost always to be pulled. These teeth often cause a wide number of problems with the other teeth in your mouth even if the wisdom teeth themselves are healthy. There is a high chance of wisdom teeth becoming impacted, which is a major reason why we always recommend getting them removed early before they can do damage.

Having an impacted tooth is another reason to get a hold. An impacted tooth is any time a tooth stops growing normally and has any type of an odd growth or angle but to cause future problems for the surrounding teeth. This can also lead to severe pain and this combination of things is why we recommend getting impacted teeth removed.

Another thing to look for is an infected or abscessed tooth. These infections can be extremely serious, especially if they spread to the mouth and into the bloodstream. All sometimes this can be fixed with a root canal on a thorough cleaning, there are other times when the full removal of the tooth is the only course of action that will make you fully healthy again.

Finally, there are certain cases or tooth will need to be removed to make room for the rest are growing properly, especially prior to having braces installed.

Get Help For Bleeding Gums?

signs of gum diseaseAre Bleeding Gums a Sign of A Serious Dental Emergency?

There are many things that can cause your gums to bleed. In general, bleeding gums are a sign that there is something wrong with your dental health. If your gums are itchy, change in color or start receding then this is a sign that you are at risk of gum disease and that you could lose your teeth.

In the early stages, gum disease is not severe, but as the gums continue to weaken and recede they expose the root of the tooth and this is where more serious problems can start to occur.

If your gums bleed when you brush them, then this is not too much to worry about – make a point of brushing your teeth twice a day, and also flossing and using mouth rinse. Gently massage your gums with a soft tooth brush while you are brushing your teeth, and over time the health of your gums should return to normal.

If, however, your gums bleed when you eat apples or corn, or just bleed easily in general, then this is a clear sign of poor dental health and you should definitely seek immediate advice from your dentist. The health of your gums is an indication of the health of the rest of your body, and you should not ignore bleeding or soreness.

The Importance of Preventative Dental Care

Many people are scared of going to the dentists, but by putting off dental treatment until your teeth actually hurt or they are starting to wobble in your mouth, you are likely making things worse. It far better to visit early on to get advice about dental care, and to have minor protective work done, than it is to visit when the problem is serious enough to require an extraction or a root canal.

Gum Disease is Nothing to Be Ashamed Of

In some areas there is a stigma associated with gum disease, because it sounds like something that people get only if they do not take good care of their teeth. The truth is that diet, general health and even family history of the condition can affect an individual’s risk. There is no shame in having gum disease. It is better to discuss your concerns with your dentist and have the condition treated than it is to put it off until it is a serious problem.

Weekend And Evening Tooth Extractions

tooth-extractionThe best way to avoid emergency dental appointments is to practice good dental hygiene and always remember to schedule and keep those routine checkups and teeth cleanings at least twice a year.

Some elderly patients or those with certain chronic health conditions may even get advised to see the dentist more than twice a year. However, there are situations that require emergency treatment, and in some cases, this even involves emergency tooth extractions.

Emergency Dental Extractions After Hours in Milwaukee

Of course, we offer emergency dental service to our dental patients. In case of pain or swelling at night or on the weekends, quick treatment may be key to preventing even worse health problems. Infections in the mouth can spread to other parts of the body. In time, they can even cause heart problems.

Besides, nobody wants to try to get through a day with dental pain so severe that it makes it hard to eat or even drink. This is not a comfortable or healthy way to be.

In case of dental emergencies:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relief.
  • Contact the emergency dental phone number (see above). There may be instructions to treat the pain at home or come to the office right away to meet the dentists. Please follow these instructions.
  • Get quick relief and an emergency solution to pain.

Followup Care For Dental Emergencies

In some cases, we might take emergency measures that might need to get followed up with a regular dental appointment later. This could be in our office, but we may refer you to a specialist if we diagnose a severe problem. Either way, you will know that you have been treated to keep the problem from getting worse and manage pain.

Billing For Emergency Extractions And Other Dental Treatment

If you have dental insurance, it should cover emergency dental extractions. If not, we will work out billing arrangements. Here at our dental office, our patients come first, and this is even more true in the case of a dental emergency.

Don’t ignore severe pain, a broken tooth, or other major signs of a dental emergency. If you have a fever or severe swelling, the emergency dental line may even give you instructions to head straight for a hospital emergency room.

However, in the vast majority of cases, our office can administer the medically correct treatment. The decision might hinge upon the overall nature of the problem and the overall health of the person who needs to seek emergency treatment.

If you need a tooth extraction in Milwaukee call the number at the top of this page for immediate help.

Why We Are The Ones To Call For Your Dental Needs?

Finding a dentist is not very hard at all, they are located everywhere. The problem is selecting the best one from all of the available choices. If you have a missing or loose filling that you need help with, you should call us. Here are several reasons that this is the best idea.

We Have Experience

Have you ever visited a dental provider who did not have a firm grasp of what they were doing? Since new dentists start all of the time, this is not something that is uncommon. Instead of taking your chances on someone new and hoping that they know enough to get the job done well, it is best to get in touch with someone who has experience – like us.

Weekend Appointments Are Available

As you probably already know, there are many dental offices that are only open during regular business hours. This is inconvenient since dental emergencies can happen at any time. Once your filling is loose or missing, it is important that you are treated as soon as possible. Waiting around can make the situation worse than it already is.

We Care About Our Patients

Great dental care is about more than knowing how to take care of teeth. You should know how to care for the patient as a whole. At our office, we sincerely want what is best for our patients. When you make an appointment here you will be treated with respect and given personalized service. You will be much more than just another medical claim that needs to be filed.

There Is No Upselling

Whether you know it or not, there are many dental providers out there who greatly exaggerate things in order to bill patients for unnecessary services. Not only is this immoral, but it weakens the bond between them. We are not like that in the least. Every time we tell you that a procedure is necessary, we truly mean it.

As you were told above, there are many dental providers available out there, and it is not always easy to tell which ones deserve your business. The key is to find one who has skills, patience, humility and respect for the people they are working with. From what you have just been told about us, it should be clear to you that we possess all of these qualities and then some, which is why you should call us the next time you need dental care.

What To Do When a Crown Comes Loose Or Breaks

crownsceramic-generaldentistryGot a Loose or Broken Crown?

Even though “permanent” crowns are supposed to be permanent, the reality is that some might last a lifetime, but some may only last five to ten years. It really depends upon the condition of the tooth that is supporting the crown, how the crown was adhered to your mouth, and your own dental hygiene practices. At one time or another, people with crowns should not be surprised if they break off or come loose.

What To Do When A Crown Comes Off

After biting into an apple or even flossing, a crown might come loose. The best thing to do first is to get the broken crown out of your mouth, so you don’t accidentally swallow it or, even worse, breathe it in. The second thing to do is to call us to schedule and appointment and get instructions about what to do in the meantime!

Is There Pain?

Most of the time, there probably won’t be any pain. If there is severe pain, it could be a sign that nerves are exposed and, in some cases, they might already be infected. In this case, it is important to contact the dentist office for an emergency appointment as quickly as possible.

If there is no pain, this situation still calls for a quick trip to our dental office, but it isn’t an emergency. Contact us for an appointment as quickly as possible. The person who makes appointments at the dental office will probably ask you to describe the crown and make an appointment within the next few days, but he or she may not treat it as an actual emergency.

Home Care Of Broken Crowns

It is probably a good idea to save the crown. If it is just a case of the cement coming loose, the old crown might simply get glued back on the dentist. In fact, there is even over-the-counter dental cement that can be purchased at the drug store. The dental office might advice you to use this until the dental appointment. If so, carefully follow instructions on the package.

In any case, rinse the crown off in warm water and save it inside of a baggy. The dentist may be able to use it. If not, he or she might still want to see it to understand how the damage was done and how to prevent it in the future.

If you can’t replace the crown, make sure your mouth is kept as clean as possible in order to avoid infection. While you might want to avoid touching that tooth with food or a toothbrush, be sure to rinse your mouth. Just be sure to schedule that appointment with our Milwaukee dental office quickly, so we can get you all fixed up with a “whole” tooth!

What To Do To Save A Tooth That Was Knocked Out

oralsurgeryA tooth can be knocked out when something strikes your face by accident. It can happen when you are playing sports, when you slip and fall, or when someone accidentally hits your mouth area at home or at work. Accidents can happen at any time.

When your tooth is knocked out, it is important that you see us immediately so that we can save your tooth and replant it back into place.

Here is what you should do to preserve your tooth while you are en route to our Milwaukee dental office.

When your tooth is knocked out, find it right away to prevent it from getting damaged further. When you find it, pick it up carefully by its crown. It is important not to disturb the root or gum tissues that are still attached to the tooth because the tissues have cells that will be crucial to the successful replant of your tooth.

Very gently rinse your tooth with water to clean off the dirt. If there is milk available, rinse it in milk. If not, use only water, without any soap or other cleansers. Avoid scrubbing the tooth. You want to leave as much of the tissue on the root as possible. Do not dry your tooth with anything because it should stay wet.

Carefully try to put the tooth back into its socket by slowly inserting your tooth into it. Make sure that your tooth is facing the right way. Do not push too hard. Hold the tooth in place by gently biting down on it or by using your fingers. If your tooth cannot be reinserted, or if it cannot stay in position, put your tooth in a cup that contains a bit of milk or some of your saliva. This will keep the cells on your tooth alive long enough as you are making your way to our clinic. Do not just put your tooth in tap water because the cells on the roots will have less chance of survival in just plain water.

If available, put a cold compress against the outside of your face to control the swelling and to reduce the pain.

Try to get to our Milwaukee dental clinic within a half hour. The sooner you can see us, the better chance you will have in saving your tooth. We will do everything possible to replant your tooth back into its rightful place.

What to Do if You Lose a Crown or a Bridge During the Weekend

It is not uncommon for crowns and bridges to get dislodged, especially if you have had them for a long time. The good news is that it is possible to put the crown or bridge back in. While losing a bridge or a crown can be quite distressing, it is rarely a serious emergency. As long as you take measures to protect the tooth and go to the dentists as soon as reasonably possible (a delay over the weekend, if your dental office is closed, should not be an issue as long as you are not in pain) the dentist should be able to fix the problem.

If you lose a crown or a bridge during normal office hours, head to the dentists immediately. If you lose it during the weekend, or a public holiday, try to preserve the damaged part until the dentists opens again, or call the dentists at www.emergencydentistmilwaukee.com.

Clean the inside of the fitting and try to remove any cement that is in there. Check that the crown or bridge will sit back inside the mouth comfortably. Remove it again and then carefully dry the inside.

Try to dry your tooth as well. If possible, use some over-the-counter temporary cement to re-seat the crown and hold it in place. If you have crowns or bridges consider keeping some of this in your first-aid kit because it comes in very handy. If you have lost the crown or bridge you can use the cement to act as a temporary cover to protect the exposed surface of the teeth.

If you were in pain, then covering the tooth again should help to reduce the pain. It is OK to take over-the-counter painkillers (assuming, of course, that you do not have an underlying medical condition and you are not taking any other medication).

Do not, under any circumstances, use standard household glues to try to repair your teeth. Many of these glues are toxic and even the ones that are not explicitly toxic could cause serious damage to your teeth. If you cannot use temporary cement for any reason, try using a small amount of normal denture fixatives, or, alternatively, a little petroleum jelly. If you go this route, then try to avoid chewing with the area of your mouth that contains the damaged tooth because this could cause the grown to become dislodged again.

Can Jaw Pain Really Lead To A Dental Emergency?

A woman with jaw painThe fact that you are reading this article shows that you live in the Milwaukee area and are experiencing some pretty bad jaw pain. Maybe you have a sharp shooting pain that you don’t understand, or perhaps an ever-present dull aching in your jaw.

You surely have heard some horror stories about such pain. Many times jaw pain is not that serious, however, it is a pain that should never be ignored! This brief article was written in order to help you to understand your symptoms.

Jaw Pain And Heart Attacks

When experiencing jaw pain it is important that a qualified dentist examine and identify the actual cause of the pain. The following information is not intended to replace such diagnostics, however, it will help you understand how to differentiate between a dental emergency and a cardiovascular one.

Cardiovascular jaw pain results from agitation of the nerves related to the heart, this sends pain signals to several specific locations. The shoulder and arms are the more known locations, however, the jaw is also a common receptor. The following information will help you to understand whether you are feeling this type of pain or suffering form a toothache, TJM, or maybe a sinus infection.

If the pain results from movement to your jaw then it is probably tooth related. If this is the case and it seems to result from a single tooth, it’s probably a cavity, abscess, or a gum irritation. It is not likely to be a sign of a heart problem, however, you should get it checked immediately by a dentist to discover the cause.

If your jaw pain is felt in the morning then there is more of a chance that it is the result of heart problems. This is because your blood thickens overnight and does not circulate as well. When you start moving around your blood pressure rises which can at times result in jaw pain.

You should be even more concerned if the pain occurs when doing physical activities. It is a high warning sign when such pain is accompanied by shortness of breath, nausea, and dizziness.

Other Common Causes Of Jaw Pain

Other common causes of jaw pain are gum infections, such as gingivitis. If you are suffering from a gum infection you will notice red and swelled gums. You should see a dentist immediately to minimize damages.

If you feel pain at the top angle of your jaw, along with a popping sensation when opening and closing it, then you probably have TJM (temporomandibular joint). If this is the case you should see a dentist for assistance.

We hope this article has been helpful in understanding the pain that you are feeling. If you have questions or are in need of a trustworthy dentist don’t hesitate to contact the dentists at emergencydentistmilwaukee.com.
